CHAPTER 7
Alex
NOW
âWhoâs ready to go to the Hamptons?â Lillian asked as we wrapped up breakfast the next morning. The rest of the weekend would be spent in East Hampton, getting an early start on the summer.
âI totally am,â Leah said, eating the last bite of her spinach omelet.
âMe, too,â Liam added. He had opted for an egg white, blueberry, spinach smoothie. Of course.
I had also gone with an omelet and was on my fourth cup of coffee, but it did nothing to quell the exhaustion coursing through me. I had stayed in the garden for at least another hour after Brooke had left, feeling even more restless than when Iâd first gone out.
Weâd barely said two words to each other this morning, which I hoped wasnât a sign of things to come. Iâd told myself that by having that long overdue conversation last night, I had done two things. One, make amends with Brooke and, two, give myself some long overdue closure so I could refocus on Leah.
I was engaged, for Christâs sake. I needed to put all my attention on my fiancée andâas Brooke had said last nightâfind a way to move forward through these strange circumstances. The jury was still out on whether or not Iâd accomplished either task.
I reached toward the center of the table to get some cream for my coffee as Brooke did the same, our hands brushing as we grabbed the pitcher. We pulled back in unison.
âSorry,â I said.
âNo worries. You go.â Sheâd barely made eye contact as she spoke, turning up the volume on the unsettled feeling still lurking in my gut.
I reached over again, pouring a little cream into her cup before moving on to mine.
âThanks,â she said.
âNo problem.â
I couldnât for the life of me tell how she was feeling this morningâother than uncomfortable being near me. Unlike dinner, where sheâd been seated right next to me, this morning Brooke was right across from meâLiam to her left, Leah to my right. My declaration had to have been a lot to process, so I was doing my best to be patient, trying to give Brooke as much space as I could.
I planned to tell Leah about Brooke and me in the car on the way to the heliportâgetting to the Hamptons by helicopter was the only way to travel these days. Apparently. It would just be the two of us on the drive over to the port, presenting the perfect opportunity to talk. It would also give Leah some time to digest, should she need it, before we were back with Liam and Brooke.
I didnât ask, but I assumed Brooke would be taking the same opportunity to talk to Liam. Judging by his smile when theyâd first come down for breakfast, he was still in the dark. I didnât think heâd be upsetâjust maybe a little awkward around me.
I pushed my plate away, my stomach too topsy-turvy to eat anymore.
Leah glanced over, concern drawing her features. âYou barely ate. Are you okay?â
I nodded.
